Motor speech disorder

Also known as: MSD

A category of speech disorders caused by neurological impairments affecting the motor planning, programming, or execution of speech movements. Motor speech disorders include dysarthria (muscle weakness or paralysis) and apraxia of speech (difficulty coordinating voluntary speech movements), and commonly result from conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, traumatic brain injury, or progressive neurological diseases. These disorders are a significant accessibility concern because affected individuals often cannot use standard voice interfaces, and automatic speech recognition systems trained on typical speech perform very poorly on motor-disordered speech, requiring specialized training approaches or alternative input methods.
