Audio description
Also known as: AD, Described video, Video description
Narration added to a media soundtrack that describes important visual information — such as actions, characters, scene changes, and on-screen text — that cannot be understood from the main audio alone. Audio description makes video and live performance content accessible to people who are blind or have low vision. In WCAG, audio description is addressed at multiple conformance levels: SC 1.2.3 (Level A) requires either a transcript or audio description for prerecorded video, SC 1.2.5 (Level AA) requires audio description for all prerecorded video, and SC 1.2.7 (Level AAA) requires extended audio description when natural pauses in dialogue are insufficient. Description can be delivered as a separate narration track, integrated into the original audio, or provided as a descriptive transcript.
