Binaural audio

Also known as: Binaural sound, Binaural recording, 3D audio

An audio reproduction method that uses two channels to create a three-dimensional sound experience when listened to through headphones. Binaural recordings capture or simulate the way human ears naturally perceive sound, using differences in timing, level, and frequency between the left and right ears (known as interaural time difference and interaural level difference) along with the filtering effects of the head and outer ear (head-related transfer functions, or HRTFs). In accessibility, binaural audio is significant for spatial audio descriptions and non-visual interfaces because it allows blind and low-vision users to perceive the direction and distance of sound sources, supporting spatial orientation in virtual environments, navigation applications, and immersive media.
