Disability justice
Also known as: DJ
An activist framework developed by disabled queer people of colour — notably Sins Invalid, Mia Mingus, and Patty Berne — that centres the experiences of those at the intersection of disability and other marginalised identities. Unlike the disability rights movement, which focuses primarily on legal protections and equal access, disability justice emphasises interdependence, collective access, anti-capitalism, cross-movement solidarity, and leadership by those most affected by systemic oppression. Its ten principles include recognising wholeness, sustainability, cross-disability solidarity, and collective liberation. In accessibility practice, disability justice challenges individualistic approaches to accommodation and argues that access is a collective responsibility, not a service provided to individuals.
