Automatic text simplification
Also known as: ATS, Text simplification, Automated readability improvement
The use of natural language processing techniques to transform complex text into simpler, more readable versions while preserving meaning. ATS operates at two levels: lexical simplification (replacing difficult words with simpler synonyms) and syntactic simplification (restructuring complex sentences into shorter, simpler forms). ATS benefits DHH readers for whom English is a second language, people with cognitive disabilities, non-native speakers, and older adults. Effective ATS tools balance simplification with meaning preservation and give users control over the level and presentation of simplification.
