Misophonia

Also known as: Selective sound sensitivity syndrome

A neurological condition characterised by strong negative emotional and physiological reactions — such as anger, anxiety, disgust, or fight-or-flight responses — to specific trigger sounds, often repetitive human-produced sounds like chewing, breathing, tapping, or pen clicking. Misophonia differs from hyperacusis (sensitivity to sound volume) in that the response is triggered by specific sound patterns rather than overall loudness. It significantly impacts daily life, relationships, and workplace functioning, yet remains poorly understood and underserved by assistive technology.
