Childhood apraxia of speech
Also known as: CAS, Developmental verbal dyspraxia, DVD
A motor speech disorder in which the brain has difficulty planning and coordinating the precise movements of the tongue, lips, jaw, and palate needed for intelligible speech. Unlike other speech disorders caused by muscle weakness, CAS involves impaired motor programming — the child knows what they want to say but struggles to execute the sequences of movements required. CAS affects approximately 1-2 per 1,000 children and requires intensive, frequent speech therapy with an emphasis on repetitive practice of motor speech sequences, making it well-suited to technology-augmented remote therapy approaches.
