Friedreich's Ataxia
Also known as: FA, FRDA
A progressive neuromuscular disease causing increasing ataxia (loss of voluntary coordination of muscle movements), dysarthria (slurred speech), muscle weakness, and in many cases pathological nystagmus (involuntary eye movements). Friedreich's Ataxia typically presents in adolescence and progressively reduces motor function over decades, making standard computer input devices increasingly difficult to use. The progressive nature of FA means assistive technology solutions must accommodate declining abilities over time, and that systems designed for static disability profiles may become inadequate as the condition progresses.
