Stepwise pointing

Also known as: Recursive target acquisition, Tile-based pointing

A mouse emulation technique in which the screen is divided into a grid of tiles, the user selects a tile to zoom into it, the tile subdivides into smaller subtiles, and this process repeats until the desired screen location is reached at pixel-level precision. Stepwise pointing eliminates the need for continuous fine motor control, making it suitable for users with ataxia, tremor, or limited precision who cannot reliably stop a cursor at a precise point. Unlike conventional mouse control, stepwise pointing operates entirely without time pressure — each selection is a discrete, untimed action — addressing the core challenge of movement-stopping accuracy in neuromuscular conditions.
