Remote interpreting

Also known as: Video remote interpreting, VRI, Remote sign language interpreting

The provision of sign language interpretation or other communication access services through video technology, where the interpreter is located in a different physical space from the deaf or hard of hearing person. Remote interpreting uses networked video connections to link interpreters with clients in real time, addressing the chronic shortage of qualified interpreters, particularly those with specialized domain knowledge needed for technical or academic subjects. While remote interpreting expands the pool of available interpreters geographically, it introduces technical challenges including video quality, latency, and the need for adequate camera positioning so the interpreter can see both the speaker and any visual materials. Remote interpreting became widely adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic and is now a standard accommodation option in education, healthcare, legal, and workplace settings.
