Access aisle
A marked, level area adjacent to an accessible parking space that provides critical clearance for people with disabilities to deploy wheelchairs, ramps, or other mobility devices when entering and exiting vehicles. Access aisles must be at least 60 inches wide and are typically indicated by diagonal striped markings on the ground. They are not intended for parking or pedestrian traffic. Van-accessible spaces require wider access aisles to accommodate side-mounted wheelchair lifts. The presence and adequate width of access aisles is one of the most important quality factors for accessible parking, as insufficient clearance can render a parking space unusable for wheelchair users.
