TalkBack

Also known as: Android TalkBack, Google TalkBack

The built-in screen reader for Android devices, developed by Google as part of the Android Accessibility Suite. TalkBack provides spoken feedback, vibration, and other audible cues to help blind and visually impaired users navigate their devices without seeing the screen. Users interact through touch gestures — swiping to move between elements, double-tapping to activate, and using explore-by-touch to hear what is under their finger. TalkBack is the primary assistive technology for the majority of blind smartphone users globally, particularly in the Global South where Android dominates the market. Its behavior and compatibility with apps varies significantly across Android versions and device manufacturers, creating inconsistent accessibility experiences. Unlike VoiceOver on iOS, TalkBack must contend with Android's fragmented ecosystem of custom manufacturer skins and varying implementation quality.
