Emergent Communicator

Also known as: Beginning Communicator, Pre-Symbolic Communicator

A person who is in the early stages of learning to use symbolic communication — understanding that symbols, words, pictures, or signs can represent objects, actions, and concepts. Emergent communicators may use a combination of gestures, vocalizations, facial expressions, and beginning symbol use to express themselves. This stage is common in young children with autism, intellectual disabilities, or other developmental conditions. AAC interventions for emergent communicators focus on building foundational communication skills using contextualized, concrete supports like visual scene displays rather than abstract symbol systems, to bridge the gap between real-world experience and symbolic representation.
