Just-in-Time Programming

Also known as: JIT Programming, Real-Time AAC Configuration

A method of configuring AAC devices in real time by capturing an image of a current activity, social interaction, or object and immediately creating a visual scene display with relevant communication options. Just-in-time programming enables communication partners to take advantage of spontaneous, meaningful moments — such as a child playing at the park or interacting with a pet — to create contextually relevant AAC content on the spot. This approach contrasts with pre-programming VSDs ahead of time, and supports more naturalistic language learning by connecting vocabulary directly to lived experiences as they happen. JIT programming requires communication partners to have both AAC expertise and quick decision-making skills, which creates barriers to widespread adoption.
