Hearing Aid

Also known as: Hearing Aids

An electronic device worn in or behind the ear that amplifies sound to assist people with hearing loss. Modern hearing aids include digital signal processing, directional microphones, and connectivity features like Bluetooth. While hearing aids improve access to speech and environmental sounds, they do not restore normal hearing—users may still miss high-frequency sounds, struggle in noisy environments, and experience listening fatigue. This has implications for media accessibility, as hearing aid users may have different captioning needs based on the sounds they can and cannot perceive.
