Disclosure of Disability

Also known as: Disability Disclosure, Self-Disclosure

The decision by a person with a disability to reveal their disability status to others, whether in educational, professional, or social settings. Disclosure is a complex and deeply personal decision influenced by factors including the nature of the disability, social stigma, fear of discrimination, professional consequences, and the potential benefits of receiving accommodations. In music settings, low vision musicians face particular tensions around disclosure because professional norms assume sighted competencies like sight reading and following a conductor visually.
