Marginalized Communities
Also known as: Marginalized Populations
Groups of people who are systematically excluded from full participation in society due to factors such as disability, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, immigration status, or other characteristics. In accessibility research, understanding marginalization is critical because disabled people at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities face compounded barriers. Accessibility solutions designed for mainstream disabled populations may not serve those who also face racism, poverty, criminalization, or other forms of structural oppression.
