Community-Based Research
Also known as: Community-Based Participatory Research, CBPR
A research approach that centers the knowledge, priorities, and participation of the community being studied, treating community members as equal partners rather than research subjects. In disability and accessibility research, community-based approaches recognize that disabled people are experts in their own lived experiences and access needs. This methodology is particularly important when working with marginalized disabled communities, where researchers must build trust, protect participants from potential harms of disclosure, and ensure that research benefits flow back to the community.
