Body Ownership Illusion

Also known as: BOI

A perceptual phenomenon in virtual reality where users perceive a virtual body or avatar as their own, experiencing it as an extension of their physical self. This illusion is fostered when the virtual representation performs the same actions as the user's actual body, such as hand or body tracking that mirrors real movements. In accessibility contexts, body ownership illusion has complex implications: it can enhance presence and engagement for disabled users, but may also create dissonance when the virtual body does not match the user's actual physical capabilities or when involuntary movements are visible to others in multiplayer settings.
