Upper Limb Impairment
Also known as: Upper Extremity Impairment, Upper Body Impairment
Reduced function in one or both arms, hands, or fingers due to conditions such as amputation, paralysis, muscular disorders, spasticity, or joint conditions. In VR and technology accessibility, upper limb impairment is particularly significant because most interaction paradigms assume full use of both hands and arms. Users with upper limb impairments may struggle with controller grip, bimanual operations, reaching overhead, and fine motor tasks like button pressing. Hand tracking can help by eliminating the need to hold controllers but may not recognize limited range of motion or atypical hand positions.
