Multimodal Interaction
Also known as: Multimodal Interface
An interaction approach that combines multiple input and output modalities—such as voice, touch, keyboard, gestures, and visual/audio feedback—to support flexible, accessible user experiences. In accessibility contexts, multimodal interaction is valuable because it allows users to choose the modality that works best for their abilities, task, and context. For blind and low vision users, multimodal calendar interfaces that combine voice commands for quick actions with screen reader navigation for verification and detailed editing ("voice for speed, screen for verification") are preferred over voice-only or screen-only approaches. Effective multimodal design ensures all modalities can accomplish all tasks and work seamlessly together.
