Error Recovery
Also known as: Error Correction, Error Handling
The process and mechanisms by which users can identify, understand, and correct errors that occur during interaction with a system. In accessibility contexts, error recovery is particularly important because errors can be harder to detect with assistive technologies—a screen reader user may not immediately notice an incorrectly entered date, and a voice assistant user may not realize a command was misinterpreted. Effective error recovery for accessible systems includes clear error messages that explain what went wrong, easy undo functionality, confirmation dialogues before executing important actions, and the ability to edit specific fields without re-entering all information. For voice-based systems, error recovery should support both voice correction and manual editing through accessible interfaces.
