Hybrid Interaction
Also known as: Multimodal Hybrid Approach
An interaction design approach that combines multiple input and output modalities, allowing users to switch between them based on task requirements, context, and personal preferences. In accessibility research, the "voice for speed, screen for verification" principle exemplifies hybrid interaction, where BLV users prefer voice commands for quick initial data entry but switch to screen reader navigation for verifying and editing details. Hybrid interaction recognizes that no single modality is optimal for all tasks and that users should be empowered to combine modalities fluidly. For calendar accessibility, this means supporting voice commands for creating events alongside keyboard/screen reader interfaces for reviewing and modifying them.
