Audio Effect Placement

Also known as: AE Placement, Sound Effect Timing

The strategic timing of sound effects relative to narration or audio description in accessible media. Three primary placement strategies have been studied: pre-placement (sound effects before narration, which aids comprehension by providing advance context), overlapping placement (sound effects during narration, which maximizes immersion and emotional engagement but may reduce clarity), and post-placement (sound effects after narration, which is generally least effective as it disrupts narrative flow). Research suggests overlapping placement should be the default strategy for immersive experiences with careful volume balancing, pre-placement should be used for scenes where clarity is critical, and post-placement should be avoided except in special cases. A hybrid approach combining strategies based on context offers the best overall experience.
