Sound Effect

Also known as: SFX, Audio Effect

An artificially created or enhanced sound used to emphasize or accompany actions, events, or atmosphere in media. In accessible webtoon and comic production, sound effects are categorized into five types: environmental ambience (crowd cheering, classroom conversations), character actions (helmet being lifted, footsteps), object interactions (Velcro strap ripping, bike tires screeching), expressive/emotional cues (deep exhale, loud heartbeat), and comic exaggerations (dramatic punch, kissing sound for humor). Sound effects serve as essential non-verbal cues that convey visual information through audio, complementing narrated audio descriptions. Their timing, volume, and quality significantly affect both immersion and comprehension for visually impaired listeners.
