Panel Transition Cue

Also known as: Scene Transition Cue, Panel Change Signal

An auditory signal used in audio-described comics and webtoons to indicate that the narrative has moved to a new panel, scene, or page. Panel transition cues help visually impaired listeners maintain orientation within the sequential narrative structure of comics, where visual panel borders and page layouts normally guide readers through the story. Effective transition cues include brief pauses (approximately 0.5 seconds), low-tone audio signals, short location phrases (e.g., "upper-left panel"), or subtle sound effects that signal scene changes without disrupting narrative flow. Research shows listeners want recognizable cues for major scene changes to stay oriented without being overwhelmed by excessive signaling.
