Ecological Validity

In user experience research, the degree to which a mediated experience feels natural, realistic, and believable—as if it could occur in a real-world context. In immersion measurement frameworks like the ITC Sense of Presence Inventory, ecological validity is a subscale alongside spatial presence, engagement, and emotional engagement. For audio-described media, ecological validity measures how well the audio experience creates a coherent, believable world for the listener. High ecological validity means the listener perceives the audio experience as a natural, unified narrative rather than a series of disconnected audio elements. Overlapping audio effect placement tends to achieve the highest ecological validity scores because simultaneous sound creates a more cohesive sensory experience.
