Autism Spectrum Disorder
Also known as: ASD, Autism
A neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication, sensory processing, and patterns of behavior and interests. Autism exists on a broad spectrum with highly variable presentations. In reading accessibility contexts, research has found that readers with autism tend to rely more on images and visual cues, have diverse ratings of text difficulty, and may prefer texts written in plain English. Reading support technologies for autistic users have included visual labels attached to physical objects, gamified literacy apps with image-to-word associations, and gaze-based support systems.
