Postural Support
Also known as: Seating Support, Positioning Support
Equipment and strategies that help maintain a person's body in a stable, functional position for activities including communication, eating, and using assistive technology. Adequate postural support is a prerequisite for many assistive technologies, particularly gaze-based systems that require stable head positioning relative to a camera. Lack of appropriate wheelchairs and seating systems is a significant barrier to AT use in the Global South, where people may sit on the floor or in communal chairs that do not provide adequate trunk, head, and limb support. Postural support is typically addressed by physiotherapists and occupational therapists as part of holistic care.
