Caregiver Support
Also known as: Carer Support, Family Support
Assistance, training, and resources provided to family members, paid carers, and other individuals who support people with disabilities in daily life. In the context of assistive technology, caregiver support is essential because caregivers often play a critical role in setting up, customizing, troubleshooting, and facilitating use of AT devices. Research in Ghana found that caregivers and family supporters actively bridged technology gaps — experimenting with phonemic spelling to produce local language output, customizing content to reflect users' interests, and providing emotional encouragement when technology failed. Effective AT deployment must include caregiver training alongside user training.
