Assistive Device

Also known as: Assistive Aid, Low-Vision Aid

Any device, tool, or technology that helps a person with a disability perform tasks that might otherwise be difficult or impossible. In low-vision contexts, assistive devices range from optical aids (magnifiers, telescopes, specialized glasses) to electronic devices (video magnifiers, screen readers, smart glasses) to non-optical aids (large print, high-contrast materials, task lighting). Low-vision rehabilitation includes assessment for appropriate assistive devices and training in their effective use as part of personalized intervention plans.
