Instrumental Activities of Daily Living

Also known as: IADLs

Complex everyday tasks that require higher-level cognitive and physical skills than basic self-care activities. IADLs include managing finances, shopping, meal preparation, housekeeping, laundry, using transportation, managing medications, and using communication technologies such as phones and computers. The ability to perform IADLs independently is a key indicator of functional capacity and is frequently assessed by occupational therapists when determining support needs. Assistive technology interventions often target IADLs to help individuals with disabilities maintain independence in their homes and communities.
