Clock-Based Directional Audio
Also known as: Clock-Face Audio Cueing, Clock Position Audio
A spatial orientation system that communicates direction to users by referencing positions on a clock face (e.g., "3 o'clock" for right, "12 o'clock" for directly ahead), often combined with distance estimates. In accessible VR and gaming contexts, clock-based directional audio provides an intuitive spatial reference framework that allows blind and low-vision users to locate objects, threats, or targets without visual cues. While generally effective, research shows this system requires an initial learning period and can be challenging under time pressure or when multiple cues overlap. Some users develop spontaneous strategies like verbalizing directions aloud to internalize the spatial mapping.
