Wheelchair Provision
Also known as: Wheelchair Service Delivery, Wheelchair Service
The comprehensive process of ensuring that individuals who need wheelchairs receive appropriate products along with the related services necessary for safe and effective use. As defined by the World Health Organization, wheelchair provision encompasses assessment, fitting, training, follow-up, maintenance, and more—going beyond simply distributing wheelchairs to include the full service ecosystem. Globally, approximately 80 million people (about 1% of the world population) require a wheelchair, but 65-95% of those who need one lack access, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The WHO has established guidelines including an eight-step service delivery process and training packages tailored for low-resource settings to improve provision quality and shift from a product delivery-centric approach to a service-oriented one that builds professional capacity.
