Independent Living Skills
Also known as: Daily Living Skills, ILS
The practical skills needed to manage everyday tasks and routines autonomously, including personal hygiene, food preparation, household chores, money management, and time management. For people with disabilities, developing independent living skills is a core component of education and rehabilitation programs. These skills are often taught through structured, sequential approaches — breaking complex routines into sub-tasks and gradually reducing assistance. For blind or visually impaired individuals, independent living skills are a key area of the Expanded Core Curriculum, requiring hands-on practice in real environments rather than classroom instruction alone.
