ADHD Tax

Also known as: Disability Tax, Crip Tax

The additional financial, emotional, and intellectual costs that people with ADHD and other neurodivergent conditions must pay to navigate systems designed for neurotypical functioning. Examples include purchasing productivity apps, planners, and wearable devices to compensate for executive functioning differences; paying for specialised coaching or therapy; and the hidden costs of missed deadlines, forgotten appointments, and impulsive purchases. The concept highlights how neurodivergent people bear disproportionate costs for participating in a society that treats neurotypical functioning as the default.
