Gesture Set Design

Also known as: Gesture Vocabulary Design

The process of selecting and defining a collection of gestures that users will perform to interact with a system, including decisions about which physical movements map to which functions. Effective gesture set design considers factors such as learnability, memorability, physical comfort, distinctiveness between gestures to minimize recognition errors, and social acceptability. In accessible contexts, gesture set design must additionally account for the physical capabilities of users with disabilities, ensuring that selected gestures are performable and comfortable across a range of motor abilities and that alternative gestures are available when standard ones are not feasible.
