Voice Interaction

Also known as: Voice User Interface, VUI, Voice-Based Interaction

An interaction paradigm where users communicate with technology primarily through spoken commands and receive audio responses, rather than using visual displays, keyboards, or touch screens. Voice interaction combines speech-to-text for input, natural language processing for understanding intent, and text-to-speech for output. For people with visual impairments, voice interaction enables hands-free, eyes-free operation of applications and devices. For people with motor impairments, it provides an alternative to physical input methods. Key design considerations for accessible voice interaction include supporting natural language rather than rigid command structures, providing clear audio feedback, handling errors gracefully through conversational repair, and ensuring the system works in noisy real-world environments.
