Verbosity Level
Also known as: Verbosity Setting, Detail Level
A configurable setting that controls the amount of detail provided in text or audio descriptions of content, particularly for screen reader users and accessible data visualizations. Verbosity levels typically range from low (minimal summary with key points only) to high (comprehensive detail including all data points, statistical measures, and contextual information). In data visualization accessibility, verbosity level determines whether alt-text includes just the title and chart type, or extends to averages, extremes, standard deviations, and trend descriptions. The optimal verbosity level varies by user, task, and context — a user quickly scanning headlines may prefer low verbosity, while someone analyzing data for a work report may need high verbosity. Screen readers also have built-in verbosity settings that control how much structural information (headings, links, form labels) is announced.
