Adaptive Gameplay

Also known as: Adaptive Difficulty, Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment

A game design approach in which the system automatically adjusts difficulty, pacing, or content based on the player's real-time performance and behaviour. In accessibility and therapeutic contexts, adaptive gameplay is used to create personalized experiences for users with varying cognitive abilities—increasing challenge when a user is performing well to maintain engagement, or reducing difficulty to prevent frustration. This approach is particularly valuable for neurodivergent users, as it can accommodate fluctuating attention spans, different processing speeds, and varying skill levels without requiring manual adjustments.
