Recreational Accessibility

Also known as: Leisure Accessibility

The design and provision of recreational activities, spaces, and experiences that are inclusive of people with disabilities. Recreational accessibility extends beyond basic physical access to encompass independent participation in leisure pursuits such as shopping, tourism, sports, and cultural events. Research shows that blind people and others with disabilities face significant barriers to recreational activities in public spaces, often depending on sighted companions for information access. The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities affirms the right to participate in recreation, making this both a design challenge and a human rights issue.
