Caption Placement
Also known as: Caption Positioning, Subtitle Placement
The decision of where captions or subtitles are positioned on a video screen, which significantly affects the viewing experience of Deaf and Hard of Hearing users. Poor caption placement can occlude important visual information such as speakers' faces, onscreen graphics, or news tickers. Research has shown that the optimal placement varies depending on the video genre and the density of onscreen information, with live television news being particularly challenging due to its many simultaneous information regions. Guidelines from organizations like the DCMP and BBC provide recommendations, but most do not address the temporal dimension of how region importance changes over time.
