Closed Captioning
Also known as: CC, Closed Captions
Text displayed on a screen that transcribes spoken dialogue, identifies speakers, and describes relevant sound effects in video content. Unlike open captions which are permanently embedded in the video, closed captions can be toggled on or off by the viewer. Closed captioning is essential for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals to access audio content in television, online video, and other media. In the United States, the FCC mandates closed captioning on television programming, and WCAG requires captions for prerecorded and live audio content on the web.
