Gamification

The application of game design elements — such as points, rewards, competition, collection mechanics, and progress tracking — in non-game contexts to increase engagement and motivation. In accessibility work, gamification has been used to encourage people to contribute accessibility information through crowdsourcing platforms, such as photographing barriers or walking routes to collect sensor data. Research has shown that gamification can reduce the gap in participation between highly motivated and less motivated contributors without significantly affecting data quality, making it a valuable technique for sustaining citizen engagement in accessibility mapping and auditing efforts.
