Essential Tremor

Also known as: ET, Benign Essential Tremor

Essential tremor is one of the most common movement disorders, characterized by involuntary, rhythmic shaking that typically affects the hands and arms but can also involve the head, voice, and other body parts. Unlike Parkinson's disease tremor, essential tremor usually occurs during voluntary movement (action tremor) rather than at rest. For technology use, essential tremor creates challenges with touchscreen accuracy, mouse pointing, text entry, and gesture-based input. Adaptive solutions include tremor-filtering algorithms, larger touch targets, stabilization features, and personalized gesture sets that accommodate the user's movement patterns rather than treating tremor as noise to be eliminated.
