Isolated Sign Recognition

Also known as: ISR, ISLR

A computer vision and machine learning task focused on identifying individual signs from video recordings where each video contains a single sign production, as opposed to continuous sign language recognition which processes connected signing in sentences or conversation. Isolated sign recognition serves as a foundational building block for more complex sign language understanding systems and is used as a benchmark task for evaluating sign language datasets and models. Challenges include handling variation between signers, recognizing signs with few training examples (few-shot recognition), and ensuring models generalize fairly across signers of different demographics.
