Hemiplegia
Also known as: Hemiparesis
A condition involving paralysis or severe weakness on one side of the body, most commonly resulting from stroke but also caused by traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, or other neurological conditions. Hemiplegia affects the arm, leg, and sometimes facial muscles on the affected side, significantly impacting mobility, dexterity, and the ability to perform two-handed tasks. In the context of assistive technology, hemiplegia creates important design considerations: tablet-based AAC devices and smartphones that require two-handed operation are difficult to use, making wrist-worn or one-handed alternatives valuable. People with right-side hemiplegia from left-hemisphere strokes often also have aphasia, creating compounded communication and physical challenges.
