Special Interest

Also known as: Hyperfocus Interest, Intense Interest

A special interest is a deep, focused, and often long-lasting passion for a specific topic, activity, or subject area, commonly experienced by autistic individuals. Special interests go beyond typical hobbies in their intensity and depth of knowledge, and they can be a source of joy, expertise, self-regulation, and social connection. In accessibility and inclusive design, special interests are relevant because they can drive community building (as seen in livestreaming and online spaces where people connect over shared passions), inform career development, and serve as a strength-based framework for understanding autistic cognition rather than focusing solely on deficits.
