Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities
Also known as: PMLD, Profound Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities, PIMD
Profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) refers to a combination of profound intellectual disability with additional physical, sensory, or health impairments that together create extremely complex support needs. Individuals with PMLD typically require high levels of support for all daily activities and may communicate through non-verbal means such as body language, facial expressions, vocalizations, or assistive communication devices. PMLD presents significant challenges for accessibility research because standard research methods may not be suitable for participants with complex communication needs, and current assistive technologies often fail to address the multidimensional nature of their access requirements.
