Visual Interpretation Services
Also known as: VIS, Remote Sighted Assistance, Visual Assistance Services
Visual interpretation services are technology platforms that connect blind and low vision users with sighted assistants (either human volunteers or paid professionals) who provide real-time visual descriptions through video calls or image sharing. Services like Aira and Be My Eyes allow BLV users to point their smartphone camera at their surroundings and receive spoken descriptions of what the camera captures. In the context of content creation, BLV creators often use these services to get feedback on the visual appearance and quality of their work — such as checking the layout of a presentation slide, the composition of a photograph, or the visual formatting of a document — compensating for the lack of non-visual feedback in creative tools.
